Wedding Violinist Cellist Ancaster: Lauren and Abim

This was our first weekend in 2014 where we performed at outdoor wedding ceremonies, and the weather could not have been better! Many guests at the ceremony echoed this, and the officiant even mentioned this at the start of the ceremony. Lauren and Abim’s wedding was really wonderful, and interesting as well, as it combined very interesting Thai tradition that I’ll get to in a moment. For the music the couple requested upbeat pop songs for the prelude and we performed a number of selections including Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean. During the ceremony they requested Here comes the sun for the maid of honor and the bride, Henry Mancini’s Moon River, and Brian Williams’ God only knows for the recessional. These songs worked exceptionally well. In the middle of the ceremony, the couple who met in Thailand, added two Thai elements to their ceremony involving both bracelets and a conch shell with holy water (extracted from the wedding program):

Rod Nam Ceremony: In traditional Thai weddings, an elder will take a conch shell filled with blessed water and pour it over the hands of the bride and groom to bestow luck and good fortune upon them. The ceremony is called Rod Nam Sang as ‘rod nam’ means soak with water and ‘sang’ means shell.

Sai Sin Ceremony: In traditional Thai ceremonies, relatives tie blessed string bracelets on the wrists of the bride and groom wishing them luck. These bracelets are to be kept on for at least three days.

Both of these were interesting to watch and learn about, and I can see these traditions being used in weddings in the future.

As the guests crossed over the bride following the ceremony, we were escorted into the 1812 room of the Ancaster Mill where the cocktail reception was supposed to take place. As the weather was so nice, all of the guests were on the outdoor patio, so we decided to setup there and perform for the cocktail hour. We received many compliments, and the bride and groom really appreciated the music we performed. What a beautiful day!

Leah and Ken’s wedding ceremony at the Chapel of the old Mill Toronto, May 3, 2014, violin and cello duo, Toronto ON

This wedding ceremony at the old mill combined classical elegance with popular light and fun music, and a good measure of family involvement. The ceremony was beautiful. The string duo started off by performing a lovely mix of classical and popular music as the guests were arriving and taking their seats for the ceremony. At the start of the wedding ceremony, the musicians performed a beautiful rendition Somewhere Over the Rainbow for the bridesmaids, followed by Don’t you Worry child for the bride. The family involvement came next, as the bride’s sister sang during the signing of the register. After the officiant introduced the couple, amidst clapping and cheering, the string duo performed the classic Mendelssohn’s Wedding March as they walked down the aisle as husband and wife.

Andrea and Adam’s wedding ceremony at the AGH Design Annex, April 26, 2014, violin & cello duo, Hamilton ON

"Thank you so much for the amazing performance on Saturday! The violin and cello really set the tone and pulled everything together to create an amazing evening! We received so many compliments on the classical music choice and skill (especially from my cousin, who is a musician and luthier from manitoba- he was utterly impressed)  We will certainly recommend you!" Andrea & Adam White

This was our first time performing at the Design Annex of the AGH in Hamilton. The venue is located on James St, which is where the now famous art crawl takes place, and is very close to the water. We arrived quite early, and setup—it was clear that as soon as we arrived (Almost 1 hour early) that all of the preparations had been taken care of—everything was in place and looked beautiful. We had a nice chat with the groom, and the officiant before the guests arrived which was nice. As the guests started to arrive, the violinist and cello player performed a mix of classical and more popular music. The ceremony proper was a fantastic mix of Pachelbel, with Bach and the Beatles added, and the guests really enjoyed our performance! What a great ceremony, venue and of course, married couple!

Wedding Strings Ancaster: Ryan and Nilusha

Our string ensemble performs regularly at the Ancaster Mill, but this wedding was one of the most unique events that we have performed at the Mill. Ryan and Nilusha had their ceremony in the 1812 room, which, when you enter the Mill, is downstairs. This was our first time playing in the room, and it is both beautiful with the dark wood and fireplace, as well as the original artifacts from the mill presented in a glass display. Rooms that have some wood in them are great for carrying and enhancing the sound of string instruments and this really helped create a beautiful ambiance and purity of the violin and cello tone.

Ryan and Nilusha were interested in having a number of pop songs from our Modern repertoire throughout their ceremony, and we worked on creating the playlist below. Their ceremony was also interesting, as they combined traditional western traditions with beautiful Indian traditions for a truly memorable and wonderful ceremony.

Alternative and interesting classical wedding music selection ideas

Despite the fact that more and more people are choosing to add pop music to their wedding ceremony for a modern feel (which we love!) I was thinking about the untapped possibilities of non-traditional classical music as part of the wedding ceremony. There are so many amazing pieces that run the gamut from romantic soaring melodies, catchy upbeat tunes to more quiet dignified music that can add an incredible degree of interest and personalization to your ceremony. Maybe music that guest and you have never even heard before, but something that just fits perfectly with what you have planned. This is one of the things that I, Matthew the owner and violinist of Duo d’Amore excel at. Why? Because If a classical music nerd, an audiophile and a fantastic resource. I love nothing more than to have an in-depth conversation with clients about the style and mood they are trying to create for their wedding or event, and then coming up with an incredible, interesting and above all exciting playlist.

Please call or email me, and let me know how I can work hard to make your wedding even more memorable, more tailored to what you want, and the mood that you want to create then you ever imagined.

New Wedding Ceremony Review

Duo d’Amore received a wonderful review from Melody and Kevin, after our string trio’s performance at their wedding ceremony on March 30, 2014 at the Eglinton Grand in Toronto:

“Matthew was always responsive to my emails and always open to suggesting music for my wedding when I wasn't sure what to select. His team played flawlessly and the transitions from song to song were very smooth. Thank you for creating a beautiful atmosphere for my wedding!”

Dale and Byron’s wedding ceremony at the Enjoy Centre, March 30, 2014, violin and cello duo, St Albert AB

Our string duo performed at this wedding at the Enjoy Centre in St Albert. Rather than recap the events, I will let the review speak for itself:

“We hired Duo d'Amore for our wedding ceremony and we could not be more pleased. We asked them to come 30 minutes early instead of 15 and they were happy to accomodate us. They were also able to play all of the songs we requested for the ceremony and did so beautifully! I teared up when I heard them start playing "Sunrise, Sunset." Thank you Duo d'Amore for making our wedding ceremony so special! We give them our highest recommendation and definitely suggest you book them for your wedding ceremony if you're looking for live music.” D&B

Heather and Philip’s wedding ceremony at Paletta Mansion, March 23, 2014, violin and cello duo, Burlington ON

We were very happy with the performance. I loved having it a part of our big day. Thank you so much. Heather, bride

We had a great time discussing the music selections with Heather for her wedding, and were able to assist her and Philip to create a wonderful soundtrack to their ceremony. The wedding was held at the beautiful Paletta Mansion overlooking Lake Ontario. The music for the ceremony was predominantly made up of classical music selections, except for the signing which was a wonderful departure into a duo of modern songs by Christina Perri and the Beatles. The music was heightened by the wooden floors and the acoustics of the room, bringing a warmth and depth to the sound of the violin and cello.

WHAT DOES A WEDDING PLANNER DO EXACTLY?

We have invited our colleague Crystal to write a guest blog post for Duo d'Amore.

Ever been to a party with a group of people you’ve never met? Inevitably the question of “so what do you do for a living?” will come up. As a Wedding Planner the reception of my career path is extremely mixed. Women who squeal gleefully at what they imagine to be a wholly romantic and luxurious career path, commitmentphobe men who cringe and look desperately for anyone else to talk to, or the ever fun and enjoyable “what’s that?” look of bewilderment.

My career as a Wedding Planner is a mix of a million other careers. I’m one part therapist, financial planner, production coordinator, designer, life coach and friend. I have to wear a million different hats and be able to randomly assume them as the situation requires and from client to client.

To my brides & grooms my role is this – guide them in creating THE moment (not A moment) of their adult lives. Your wedding should be filled with Once-in-a-Lifetime Awesomeness – that’s where we come in! It’s about facilitating their journey through this rite of passage and time honoured tradition called marriage. My job is to wade them through the sea of options to narrow the vision and create THE MOMENT that is completely perfect for them. Sometimes this means getting them barefoot on a beach in Bali or wrapped in Vera Wang surrounded in a landscape of orchids and glittering crystals. Whatever my clients vision for their big day it’s my job to get them there.

To vendors my role is a bit different – the people you surround yourself with, involve yourself with, take creativity, time or energy from seek out a Wedding Planner as a haven of understanding. I’ve walked the role of a wedding day Photographer. Bore witness to an Officiants process. Worked closely with Designers to understand their terms, their foundations, their logistics. My job is that of translator of my clients vision. Vendors seek guidance, clarity and confirmation that their skills and services match you, my clients, vision.

To your bridal party – I become the producer or orchestrator of the wedding. While they are the actors, I am the director, guiding them through posturing, placement, timing and most of all enjoyment. I am their personal cruise director to make sure that they are enjoying your big day almost as much as the client!

To your family – I am the peacemaker and therapist. Planning a wedding is emotional for everyone involved. I navigate the terrain of family issues with a keen eye to perception and foresight in viewing problems. When we see the problems in advance their less likely to creep into the wedding day. We act as both the sounding board and landing pad for secure and happy families.

Still unsure of what my career is? Or as a man at a party once joked… “right, I get all that… but what do you DO exactly?”.

Here’s a rundown of just a few tangible  components of what I DO as a Wedding Planner:
- consultations to discuss vision & priorities
- site inspections
- custom creating a wedding design plan
- vendor referrals
- catering logistics, menu planning & tasting
- itinerary creation
- budget analysis
- planning checklists
- direction of ceremony rehearsal
- vendor liason
- wedding day setup/coordination
- emergency assistance & training
- overseeing scheduling & event

Hiring a Wedding Planner is not a sign of weakness from a bride & groom but rather a strength. It’s an open acknowledgement to your friends, family and vendors that you have a vision for your big day and don’t want them to be concerned or stressed about the details but rather to enjoy the celebration. Enjoy the spotlight and let an experienced Wedding Planning professional pull it together for a smooth and elegant wedding.
