Wildfire smoke at wedding ceremony in Alberta 2018

Duo d’Amore’s string ensembles have performed in many venues and under many circumstances: we have performed on beaches, on mountaintops, at both the atlantic and pacific coasts, on the prairies, at vineyards, on ships, on trains, but this weekend was a first for us–we performed amidst the smoke from wildfires at two different wedding ceremonies in and around Canmore AB. This certainly made for a unique and memorable experience, one that the bride and groom as well as the guests will remember for the rest of their lives. Tourism operators in the area haven’t agreed if the wildfires and smoke is having an impact on business, but judging from the fact that wedding ceremonies are still taking place, people are trying their best to go on despite and setbacks. One thing to note is that if you are travelling in the Canmore/Banff area please consult www.banfflakelouise.com  for up to date information on weather conditions/ road closures etc.

Alicia + John’s wedding ceremony at Starling Lane Vineyard July 9, 2016, Victoria BC wedding ceremony music

Our string ensembles have had the pleasure of performing at Starling Lane Vineyard several times in the past, and we are happy to be back. Working with Alicia on choosing the music was a pleasure—one of the songs that she particularly wanted during the ceremony was Bridge over Troubled Water, and were extremely happy to be able to incorporate this songs during the ceremony. The signing portion was the perfect place to perform this song, and it was followed beautifully by the recessional music with concluded the ceremony sin such a lovely way.

Nadine + Ryans’s wedding ceremony at Kurtz Orchard Farm Estate, July 12, 2015, violin and cello duo, Niagara wedding ceremony musicians

We were very happy with Duo d’Amore. We got a string duo (violin and cello) for our wedding last weekend. We had had the idea of having the theme from Zelda (beloved video game from our childhood with an awesome theme song) as our Recessional tune, but I wasn’t sure how easy it would be to find musicians who would go through the trouble of making a custom arrangement for us, and I was worried such a thing might up the cost. They did a great job; many of our guests recognized the tune and commented on it, we got a lot of love for that one haha! I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Duo d’Amore, especially if you want some awesome/quirky custom arrangements” Nadine, bride

Described as “the perfect vineyard wedding” by Vineyard Bride we were glad to have provided the soundtrack to the amazing ceremony. Our violinist and cellist performed the following playlist in the beautiful gazebo at Kurtz Orchards Farm Estate. We also had the opportunity to work alongside two very talented people, Megan  the wedding planner from Weddings Tied With Lace, which is always a pleasure, and Elizabeth the photographer from Elizabeth in Love. Great things happen with a great team, and the real congratulations go to the amazing bride and groom!

Thuy+John wedding ceremony at Casa Loma, June 28, 2014, violin and cello duo, wedding musicians Toronto, ON

Our ceremony was beautiful.  I was nervous and there were many things going on for me to recall the whole performance but parts of my recollection was how beautiful and a great complimentary the performance was.  Please thank the musicians for me that played once again as my husband and I thank you from our hearts for the excellent pieces that the two ladies did at our wedding.” Thuy, bride

We always enjoy performing at Casa Loma, and this wedding ceremony was no exception. The venue as as you can imagine (if you have never been there) is a large gothic revival building, which has the feel and grandeur of a castle. In planning the music selections, Thuy and John chose selections from the traditional classical repertoire that fit perfectly with their tastes, and matched the style of the wedding, as well as the style of the venue as a whole. Our violinist and cellist set up prior to the main arrival of the guests, and as the guests entered performed several selections of classical music to set and fit the mood, including movements from Handel’s Water Music. As with most wedding ceremonies, the ceremony begins with the bridesmaids walk down the aisle. Thuy and John really took advantage of the large aisle, and had a processional with considerable style: they not only had the bridesmaids walk down the aisle, but also included family members, flower girls and a whole procession of people, and they chose the wonderfully flowing and happy Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring, which was an absolutely perfect fit. The bride walked down to Pachelbel’s Canon (again, perfect) then there was a break in the music for the important vows, and kiss. For the signing of the marriage documents, Duo d’Amore performed Bach’s Air on the G-string, which is one of our favorites, especially for the signing. As the couple was introduced, we performed Mendelsohn’s Wedding March.

Kristina and Dean’s wedding ceremony at The Beach House, June 7, 2014, violin and cello duo, Victoria BC

“Thank you! Your musicians were wonderful, and we are grateful that they could work in a composition of You Hand in Mine which was beautiful, and exactly how we pictured Kristina’s walk down the aisle. Take care, and thanks again!” Dean & Kristina, bride and groom

This Victoria BC wedding combined classical elegance with a custom modern arrangement, and a fun upbeat recessional, for an amazing combined effect. Our violinist and cellist had a lot of fun performing these musical selections at The Beach House, and that really came through in the performance, as it created a great vibe, hovering between traditional classical music, and an unexpected modern twist, something that, not to brag, but we are very good at!

It was a true pleasure for Duo d’Amore to perform, and we look forward to returning to this beautiful location in the future. Our congratulations to the bride and groom, as well!

Kim and Reinhold’s wedding ceremony in the Spanish Ballroom of the Rosewood Hotel Georgia, violin and cello duo, April 26, 2014, Vancouver, BC

“It was absolutely lovely – Duo d’Amore were very good. Thank you so much!” Kim and Reinhold

Working with Kim and Reinhold to make sure their wedding was spectacular was amazing, and easy! They wanted a ceremony that was, in Kim’s words “elegant and understated, simple and beautiful.” Using our website as a guide and listening to our samples, they came up with wonderful wedding ceremony music selections, and found the whole process to be easy. Here is the ceremony music they chose for the violinist and cellist to perform:

Bridesmaids processional: Bach – Air on a G string

Bride’s processional: Bach – Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring

Signing: Vivaldi – Winter from Four Seasons

Recessional: Handel – La Rejouissance

All of these selections really work well in a room like the Spanish Ballroom, letting the sound of the violin and cello fill the room, and really bloom. Great music for a great couple!

Carly and Brendan’s wedding ceremony at Pitt Meadows Golf Club, violin and cello duo, August 30, Pitt Meadows BC

We really enjoyed working with Carly and Brendan, as there was a spirit of fun and excitement around their wedding, which seemed to be captured in the music for the wedding day. One thing that they decided upon that has worked well in the past is they let us pick part of the music as a surprise. For the songs they selected, they picked a great mix of upbeat pop and contemporary songs as well as a classical favorite that added a great touch to complete the ceremony. Congratulations.

Cavelle and Harry’s wedding ceremony at the Hotel Arts, violin and cello duo, August 23, Calgary AB

Our violin and cello duo had a great time performing for this wedding, as everything went smoothly and sounded beautiful. We started by performing the classic Pachelbel’s Canon for the wedding party and bride, continuing on to Bach-Gounod’s Ave Maria during the signing (a beautiful piece and ideal for the signing of the register) and finishing off with a well chosen and upbeat Trumpet Voluntary by Jeremiah Clarke.
