This was a picture perfect outdoor wedding, as you can see from the photo and if you look at the photos from the very talented Amy Eaton. The weather at The Cove in Westport was perfect, the ambiance, flowers, music—just everything. Marie-Eve and Marc were extremely easy to work with, and they selected warm, spring like music that especially complemented the ceremony. To start the string duo performed Christina Perri’s A Thousand years. In this arrangement the violin has the melody while the cello accompanies, and it is a very effective song for the processional at an outdoor wedding. The signing was Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, which brings the excitement down considerable, but the romance up a few notches (which of course is important in a wedding ceremony). To conclude the ceremony, the very popular and also romantic by with a bit more of a beat, Somewhere over the Rainbow.

It would be an understatement to say that music was important to this wonderful couple, because music was at the absolute center of the wedding ceremony. The groom’s cousin is a professional opera singer, and her husband is a composer—how perfect is that? Between the two of them, they gave us and the bride and groom and the guests a real treat: they arranged wedding ceremony music selections for singer, guitar and violin and cello duo for the ceremony.
Prior to the start of the ceremony, the guests had drinks upstairs at the Berkeley Church, and then moved to the mezzanine for the ceremony. The ceremony was beautiful, and we were glad to have rehearsed with the singer and guitar player just prior to make sure that we were all on the same page as far as the music was concerned, and everything worked out spectacularly at the ceremony, and we received rave reviews from the guests.

Yesterday, we performed an informal concert for the residents at Pearl and Pine Retirement Residence in Burlington, and it was a wonderful event, and a pleasure to perform. The residence has only been open since November, so everything is brand new. Upon walking up the large spiral staircase in the central lobby, we setup our music stands and chairs to the side of the piano, near the well appointed bar, where there were a number of guests from the residence. After introducing ourselves, we performed an interesting mix of classical music. First, we started with baroque works of music, or music composed roughly between 1600-1750. Popular classics by Bach, Handel and Vivaldi, with a sprinkling of Pachelbel added as well. After we finished this set, we took a few more minutes to talk about ourselves as well as the type of music that we were just about to perform: classical, or music written from about 1750-1820. We included compositions by Haydn and Mozart and to name two very well know composers from that era. Before performing our last set of music, we took a few minutes to talk to the residents about our instruments, describing the different woods that the instruments and bows are made from, as well as the history of both our violin and cello. When we had finished our performance, we had the chance to speak with several of the residents who were very appreciative of our performance and had a number of interesting questions. We look forward to playing for the residents of Pearl and Pine in the future.

Spring is one of my favorite seasons, May in particular. Even nicer than all the flowers, the green grass, the birds singing, is a spring wedding ceremony, in a church on a warm day. There is just so much promise and excitement in a spring ceremony, and we are always happy to perform. Kayla and Andrew chose quite traditional music, which we always like as it just fits so perfectly. I particularly enjoy the combination of Bach Air with Pachelbel Canon, as the Bach Air has such a smoothness to the sound, which Pachelbel Canon is much more contrasting, and almost bursts forth with energy. The signing is paced slightly slower, as this gives the guests a chance to think about the couples marriage (and snap a few photos in some cases) while the bride and groom sign the marriage documents. Bach’s Jesu Joy is perfect for this as well. Lastly, as the couple is introduced for the first time, what is more appropriate than the Mendelssohn wedding March in a church, in May?

Where do I start with the wedding? There are some ceremonies where there is one thing that stands out—perhaps the bride has an amazing dress, something funny or unexpected happens at the ceremony, the music is particularly beautiful, or the officiant does an especially fine job. This wedding, just it all the right notes, and the ceremony was at once beautiful and traditional, while at the same time had an unexpected twist that was lovely and special. When I first spoke with Amy, the bride, she knew that she wanted to walk down the aisle to Elvis’ Can’t Help Falling in love, and were happy to oblige, as it is a beautiful song, and very well suited to the processional. As sometimes churches have issues with more modern music being performed during wedding ceremonies, I was glad to hear that the Church had no such issues, and we were given the go ahead to perform this song. Prior to the bridal processional, our string duo performed Bach’s Jesu Joy, which is a traditional song for weddings. I always like the bridal processional to be a bit more showy and elevated than the preceding song, as after all the processional is the brides moment, and the music should really reflect that. In this case the song was a perfect contrast. The signing music moved back to the classical spectrum with the wonderful and ‘cooling” Largo from the Four seasons by Vivaldi. The plucked strings of the cello are sound like a snowfall, while the violin part soars above, for a stunning effect. As the couple triumphantly walked down the aisle at St John’s United Church, we finished off the ceremony music with Handel’s second hornpipe from the Water music.

Jennifer and Stephen’s wedding ceremony at the Waterfront Hotel in Downtown Burlington, May 17, 2014, violin and cello duo, Burlington ON
We initially spoke with Jennifer as sometimes happens, as they had booked a duo from another company that had to cancel for some reason or another, and we were happy to fill in and perform for her wedding ceremony in downtown Burlington at the Waterfront Hotel. As we subbed in at the last minute, the couple already had their wedding ceremony songs picked out (classical) for the violin and cello duo. They also hired our string ensemble to perform at the cocktail hour immediately following the ceremony, and their only request was to keep the music laid back and fun, and our violinist and cellist performed a mixture of music including several fun pop arrangements.
